This image was chosen to be in the juried exhibition "La Jolla Digital" presented by the La Jolla Art Association. Juror: Daniel Foster, Executive Director of the Riverside Art Museum. This work was given an Honorable Mention. The exhibit ran from July 11-24, 2006 at the Village Gallery, 7932 Ivanhoe Avenue, La Jolla.

This image is different from what I usually do. Although we artists have curious and inquiring minds, we tend to develop a style that is consistent throughout much of our work. My style tends to emphasize color and abstract color and shape relationships. "Brolly" is more a monochromatic, architectural study that piqued my curiosity. I was sitting in my back yard and happened to look up at the wooden spokes of my lovely striped umbrella. I was really enchanted with the powerful criss crossed patterns and the pattern of the supports. This contrasted with the soft and undulating stripes of the umbrella fabric in such an interesting way. I got my digital camera and started snapping lots of pictures. Taking the best compositionally, I brought the image into Photoshop and Painter. The artwork looks like black, white and grey but the actual image has lovely and subtle areas of sienna and gold across the struts. I also used the watercolor brushes found in Painter to create a more subtle softness to the stripes. I'm very pleased with the final result.
