During the summer of 1999, I was staying in the Lake Como area and decided to take one of the wonderful ferries to Menaggio. After being on the ferry for about an hour and a half, walking around the town to find a scene that interested me and setting up, I had just barely started painting when the rain and winds came. Having taken so long to get there, I was determined that I would paint this watercolor, rain or no. Clutching an umbrella in one hand and a paint brush in the other, I worked as fast as I could before the winds could whip the paper away. "Storm Starting Menaggio" is the result and I couldn't be happier. I think I captured the sense of a storm brewing, while keeping the actual scene light, airy and interesting. This was an instance where spontaneity won out over formal preparation.
